People begged Nintendo for Game Cube controller support, so instead of creating a proprietary wired controller, they went retro. In order to play Smash with 8 players, you'll need a minimum of 3 wired controllers, hence the need for Game Cube controller adapters.

Each wireless controller takes up one of four blue tooth slots, plus the Game Pad which uses a proprietary 5Ghz connection ie not Bluetooth.

The Pro controller shares the same wireless protocol as a Wiimote although it's not recognized by Wii software. Gamepad, and up to four Wiimotes (with or without attachments) or Pro controllers. You can use a maximum of five wireless controllers with the Wii-U.
And yes twice is enough with a game like smash to feel out a controllers worth. I've played the u version twice at best buy so I speak from experience, not just assumption. Buttons feel cheap, and mushy to press, shoulder buttons are not so great, and the right joystick being above the buttons instead of below makes doing a quick smash a hassle cause you have to reach out of the way to hit it now. Pro controllers are cheaply made, and other than being wireless are a few steps down in quality from a gamecube controller. It gets the job done on mario kart for instance, but a gamecube controller would be better. I'd be hugely disappointed to have to settle for a pro controller for smash. Every button is placed almost as if for Smash Brothers specifically.
But most people play even better with a gamecube. Yes, you can still be good with a pro controller, a nunchuck, a 3DS as a controller, a wii mote, a classic controller. Smash ain't the same without a gamecube controller. None of those reasons are good enough to hold off on getting the adapter that let's you play smash to the best of your ability, let's be serious. And, of course, the GameCube pad doesn’t have a Home button like these other controllers - returning to the console menu, checking friend lists or accessing Miiverse are not possible. The Wii U menu doesn’t recognize the GameCube controller, so the GamePad, Pro Controller, or Wii Remote are still required to get into the game. for Wii U will acknowledge when a GameCube controller is plugged in, so there is no getting around using another controller to get your Smash on. Nintendo refers to this as “tournament-length” on the box, and coupled with the additional 3 ft from the adapter, that’s quite a lot of slack.Īs of this writing, only Super Smash Bros. Only now, there’s a different logo on its face and the cord length is bumped up from the original controller’s 6.5 ft to 9 ft. The new Smash Bros.-branded GameCube controllers are the same quirky pads as they’ve always been, right down to the model number. Everyone else, though, will have to deal with having a bunch of wires suddenly coming out of their entertainment center – just like the old days! Those with WaveBirds can happily stash the adapter somewhere out of sight.
With three feet of cord, you should be able to find a comfortable location near your console to place the adapter.
